Program

Artificial Nests & Habitat Restoration

Restore safer nesting conditions in a hotter, more disturbed coastal landscape.

An African penguin chick sheltered inside an artificial nest in coastal vegetation.

Problem

Historical guano removal stripped many colonies of natural burrowing material. Modern heat stress and exposed nests make eggs and chicks more vulnerable.

What SAPA does

SAPA supports partner-led artificial nest deployment, shade trials, habitat restoration, maintenance, and monitoring to learn which designs improve breeding success.

Why it matters

This program connects donor support to practical conservation conditions: less disturbance, better evidence, stronger partners, and more resilient colonies.

Field note

A 2026 field update for this program will combine a partner quote, image credit, measured outcome, and donor-funded next step once seasonal reporting is complete.
